Auf der kleinen, schmalen Insel Hiddensee gibt es ganz im Norden, wo das Hochland mit den anmutig gewellten Hügeln und der Steilküste liegt, einen kleinen Inselfriedhof. Wenn man vom Hafen die Strasse herauf kommt und ein Stück nach Westen die Dorfstrasse entlang geht, gelangt man an die alte Inselkirche. Sie stammt noch aus der Zeit, als in unmittelbarer Nähe, genau genommen auf der anderen Seite des Weges, ein großes Zisterzienserkloster stand. Die Inselkirche stand damals etwas außerhalb der Anlage und war für die Inselbewohner und Seeleute gedacht. Somit ist sie mit das älteste Bauwerk auf der Insel. Um die kleine Kirche herum, mehr aber im hinteren Teil, erstreckt sich auf einem ansteigenden Gelände der Inselfriedhof.
Wer wirklich einmal Ruhe braucht zum meditieren oder einfach nur so zum Seele baumeln lassen, der ist hier richtig.Gerhard Hauptmann hat hier seine letzte Ruhestätte gefunden, weiter oben entdeckt man das Grab von Grete Palucka, diese fabelhafte Tänzerin und Pädagogin, und viele Gräber mit den typischen Insel- namen Schluck, Gau, Dröse und wenige mehr. Es ist ein traumhaft schöner Ort, ringsherum sieht man die aufsteigenden Hügel mit den verstreuten Häusern, von der Steilküste dringt das Rauschen der Brandung herüber und ab und zu segelt eine Möwe am Himmel entlang. Die Besucher, die ab und zu scheu durch das Gelände streifen, stören kaum und so kann man sitzen, in die Geräusche und sich selbst hereinhorchen.
